Awakening from the American dream. The experiences of the return of young migrants in the southern border of Mexico

Abstract

The following work aims to reflect on that experience of return that some migrants from Chiapas complete after making the journey to the so-called American dream. To develop this research, an approach was made to the rural youth of Las Margaritas, Chiapas, which for several decades has been incorporated into the international labor market. For this, we distinguish the discursive elements that make them recognize and create their own identity about themselves, as well as find out what is the influence that these mechanisms exert when meditating the return to the place of origin. Likewise, an approach is made to the interpretation of their stories to know the vision of the youth regarding the return, as well as the new patterns, styles and youthful practices that are created when returning.

    Doctor en Ciencias Sociales y Humanísticas por el Centro de Estudios Superiores de México y Centroamérica de la Universidad de Ciencias y Artes de Chiapas (CESMECA-UNICACH). Actualmente es investigador asociado en El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR), unidad Tapachula, en el Grupo Académico de Estudios de Migración y Procesos Transfronterizos del Departamento de Sociedad y Cultura. Líneas de investigación: jóvenes migrantes, Estado y violencia en el sur de México y Centroamérica.

    Doctor en Ciencias Sociales por el Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social (CIESAS-Occidente). Actualmente es Coordinador del Doctorado en Estudios de Migración de El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (COLEF). Líneas de investigación: migración en tránsito, racismo y etnicidad.
