Migrating as a family and accessing school: youth in Mexico and the United States

Abstract

This paper analyzes the migratory experiences of 16 young people in Mexico and the United States from their family environments to their first day of school. Their school insertion is analyzed in relation to their migratory trajectories. In their transits, young people in a condition of mobility construct a version of their own process, essential to understand their reality from their perceptions. An ethnographic-narrative approach was used to collect data, and a content analysis was conducted. The findings highlight three key aspects: family preparation prior to migration, support networks and integration into the school environment. It is concluded that the education system must recognize the knowledge and emotions of migrant students, as well as understand their resources to adapt. Otherwise, schooling perpetuates exclusion instead of favoring the educational and social inclusion of this population.
