Family support to Venezuelan migrant children’s remote education in Peru during COVID-19: An analysis from a Care framework

Abstract

The literature suggests that family support to children and adolescents’ remote education, as a consequence of COVID-19 and school closures, increased the unpaid care work of mothers –both national and foreign– and made it difficult for this population to reconcile work and family life. Via a care framework, our mixed-methods research aims to understand how the pandemic aggravated pre-existing gender gaps in paid and unpaid work among a sample of Venezuelan migrant mothers in Peru. Specifically, we focus on the structural and technological limitations that hindered their accompaniment of their children’s remote education, as well as the resources and strategies they used to reconcile the needs of productive work and unpaid care work. We conclude by highlighting that, for Venezuelan migrant mothers, the work of educational accompaniment of their children was affected by a mixture of factors that impacted women in general and migrant women specifically.
