Abstract

Every year thousands of families have to deal with the physical separation of their members as a result of deportations conducted by US immigration authorities. The objective of this paper is to analyze the migratory strategies carried out by Mexican families after the deportation of some of their members, either to adapt to the situation of separation and / or to achieve family reunification in the United States. Based on ten interviews with deported migrants, these strategies are analyzed, highlighting the place of residence of family members over time. Moreover, to contextualize politically and historically the phenomenon of family separation by deportation, we analyze immigration control policies since the 1990s.
